Hosting an event is a wonderful way to bring people together and create lasting memories. However, it’s essential to be mindful of the environmental impact that large gatherings can have. Fortunately, with a few conscious choices, you can host a sustainable and eco-friendly event that not only delights your guests but also reduces your carbon footprint.

Opt for Digital Invitations
Sending out digital invitations is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper invitations. Use email or social media platforms to invite your guests, and consider creating an event webpage for all the necessary information. Digital invitations not only save trees but also allow for easy updates and RSVP tracking. Canva is an online platform that makes creating digital invites and designs a breeze! And it’s free to use.
Mindful Decorations
When it comes to decorations, choose reusable and sustainable options. Consider renting table linens, centerpieces, and other decor items instead of buying single-use items that will end up in the trash. 1631 Event Venue offers linen and event rentals which saves money and is more sustainable.
Serve Sustainable Food and Drinks
Food and beverages are an integral part of any event, and there are several ways to make your menu more sustainable. Opt for locally-sourced, organic, and seasonal ingredients to support local farmers and reduce the carbon footprint of transportation. Minimize single-use plastics by using compostable or reusable cutlery, plates, and cups. 1631 Venue is partnered with Refill Goodness, an eco-minded store that encourages refilling every day items like soap, instead of buying new items. The owner Jenny Sparkle is a wealth of knowledge and can help you plan a sustainable event from start to finish!
Gift Responsibly
If you plan to give gifts or favors to your guests, choose items that are sustainable, reusable, or biodegradable. Consider personalized reusable water bottles, eco-friendly tote bags, or packets of seeds for planting. These upcycled tall glasses make a wonderful gift for sustainably minded brides, moms-to-be or anyone who loves bright, eco-friendly glasses!
Opt For Local Wines, Spirits and Beer
If you are offering libations at your party, opt for local wines, beer and spirits. Not only are they more sustainable options, but you will feel good in helping support local breweries, wineries and distilleries. For those looking for a sustainable drink menu, consider hiring Chesapeake Bartenders – they have relationships with local distributors, wineries and breweries, and can recommend an eco-conscious beverage menu. Did you know we have some amazing local wineries right on Kent Island? Love Point Winery and Cascia Winery are beautiful wineries with delicious wine offerings. Nearby town, St. Michael’s is home to St. Michael’s Winery as well.
On Site Recycling and Composting
With a simple web search, you can find local companies that offer on site pick up for compostables and recyclables. Here on the Eastern Shore, we are fortunate to have access to Shore Soils, which provides recycling and composting containers that can be dropped off before your event and picked up after your event. 1631 Venue recently hosted Green Drinks, organized by Refill Goodness, and Shore Soils promptly delivered both recycling and composting containers and picked them up the next day.
Collaborate with Local Vendors
Working with local vendors and suppliers allows you to minimize your carbon footprint, as goods don’t have to travel as far, as well as promotes sustainability. Seek out businesses that use eco-friendly packaging, support local communities, and prioritize ethical practices, such as 1631’s network of local, woman-owned businesses.
Hosting an eco-friendly event is not only a responsible choice for the environment but also an opportunity to inspire others to adopt sustainable practices. Encourage your guests to join in your efforts and make sustainability a central theme of your event. By making mindful choices, we can all contribute to a more sustainable future while still enjoying the joy and togetherness that events bring.
